Biotech alumni career event

“What do I want to do after studies? What sort of job can I do after my studies? Which companies are out there offering jobs for someone with my background? Should I stay in academic research or go to industries?”

Sharing of experience

These and many more questions are usually part of each master student’s life in the final year. And the students at the D-BSSE are no exception thereof. Every member of our Biotech Alumni association were in this same tricky situation a couple of years ago or even just recently. In scope of the 150th anniversary of the ETH alumni, we wanted to share our experiences with current BSSE students and gave them a small insight into the variety of jobs that are out there and explained how to get them.

Daily challenges

50 interested students and alumni thus showed up at the career event on March 27, in the science lounge of the BSSE. After a short introduction, three alumni shared the stories about their career story with the audience. Noemie Kouassi explained the pros and cons of the life as a patent attorney and talked about the on-the-job training. David Ausländer explained his role as a scientist in industries and the differences to academic science. Samuel Hess has recently started his own start-up company and talked about his daily challenges and the fascination about his work that led him to take on this career path.

Positive Feedback

The huge interest in the subsequent question round and the positive feedback showed us that this is an important topic for the students and that the event should be repeated. We thank all the presenters, all participants for their input and the D-BSSE for hosting us.
