Stefan Schuppisser, an ETH Alumnus, and CFO of the Swiss owned wine retail company CHEERS Wines in Beijing invited the Alumni Chapter Beijing to a “Blind Wine Tasting” gathering event on 20 April - during one of the nicest seasons in Beijing with blooming flowers everywhere.

A new twist on wine tasting

CHEERS Wines is a wine import and retail company that makes wine drinking fun and affordable. They strive to offer a pre-selected assortment of 150 wines that are characteristic for all major wine growing regions of the world at best price value available to customers. Headquartered in externe SeiteBeijing with partner stores throughout externe SeiteChina, the company really gives a fresh twist to wine drinking!

Stefan loves to surprise and entertain his customers and friends with an outstanding selection of wines His aim was also teaching the alumni more about his passion for wine in a fun, informal and professional way.

A diverse group of tasters

To start the weekend off with a special highlight, the alumni not only learned about wines but more importantly got to try them blindfolded! Everyone was curious on how this would work.

The participants were a diverse crowd as the alumni attending come from different fields such as mechanical engineering, immunology to actuarial science. They were joined by several people interested, from the Swiss community in Beijing and friends of participating alumni, in learning about ETH as well (or maybe it was more the wine tasting, but who knows…).

Applying the knowledge

After everyone was introduced to each other and had had a small apéro with olives, salami, and Baozza (a novel and tasty snack combining pizza with Baozi, a traditional Chinese steamed bun), the event started with a basic introduction to wine by AngQian, the Wine Expert at CHEERS Wines. Different geographical locations and grapes were linked to the color, aroma, and taste of the wines. Like in scientific studies, after learning the theoretical knowledge, the attendees got to conduct the physical experiment - a “Blind Wine Tasting”. While blindfolded, the remaining senses are stronger, so one can taste the character of the different grapes much better. Everyone really enjoyed the tasting and was happy to be able to learn more about wines and get to apply the learnt knowledge immediately.

The Alumni Chapter Beijing is looking forward to the next event, where they will visit a gallery displaying contemporary Chinese art and where they hope to see even more alumni and friends there!
