Five alumni met at the National Institute of Clean and Low-Carbon Energy, a state-level innovation base in the clean energy arena that is affiliated to CHN Energy, the largest coal enterprise in China. On June 3, 2018, scholars from the field gave a small seminar with several talks on different areas of new energy in the morning. This was combined with an exhibition tour after lunch to learn about innovative ideas in the new energy sector and to get to know one another better.

In order to further establish mutually beneficial relationships and strengthen the bond with other associations in Beijing, the ETH Alumni Chapter Beijing had a Salon & Tour of new energy together with the Switzerland Chapter and Hireding Salon of the WRSA.

A fruitful cooperation

The WRSA, established in October 1913, serves the purpose of uniting students who have returned from their studies in Europe and America, while maintaining contact with overseas students and their relatives. This helps to strengthen friendships among them, exchange experiences and jointly work towards the rejuvenation of China and the unification of the motherland. It is the biggest association for overseas-educated scholars in China. The Switzerland Chapter, in particular, serves scholars with experience in Switzerland, and Hireding Salon was initiated by scholars who are fond of reading.

Learning about key issues

The event was held at the National Institute of Clean and Low-Carbon Energy. CHN Energy is the largest and most modern coal enterprise in China and the largest coal supplier in the world. The limited reserves of fossil fuels and the increase of the world population forces us to deal with energy shortage issues. The development of new energy is one direction for addressing such topics and the investment into these developments is the new hot spot. What shall we do?

Exploring new frontiers

Five ETH Alumni together with members of WRSA learned about the latest developments of new energy and gained further insights on the tour of the new energy exhibition at the institute. Scholars from the China National Nuclear Corporation, the National Energy Conservation Center, and CHN Energy talked about these issues from different point of views. The specific areas discussed included nuclear energy, water treatment and environmental care, coal chemistry, future energy, and Chinese energy transition, etc. The exhibition tour was guided by Xiaoying Xu, a senior researcher at the institute and a previous doctoral student of ETH. Besides the Salon & Tour, the participants enjoyed a lunch together and had a fruitful day. The ETH Alumni Chapter Beijing and the Switzerland Chapter of WRSA value their relationship and expect to increase their cooperation in the future.
