On Tuesday, June 5, 2018, 16 members of the Alumni Chapter France made the trip to Saint Nazaire, France, to visit the MAN Diesel & Turbo production plant and its impressive assembly and testing site of diesel engines that can run both on liquid fuel and gas. Following, the group toured the STX construction site (former Chantiers de l’Atlantique) which is one of the world's largest shipyards, where, for example, mega cruise ships are manufactured.
The detailed explanations given at both sites allowed the participants to better understand the challenges these companies are facing.

Highlights of the day

Highlights included of course the production of cruise engines that have to be as reliable and as “clean” as possible. Also the construction of the biggest ships produced in the world from the famous Queen Mary 2 to the Harmony of the Seas and the Symphony of the Seas that holds close to 7’000 passengers on board and looks like a city with all possible services (pools, theaters, numbers of restaurants,…)!

A fascinating tour

In addition, the alumni were fascinated by the amount and type of technology displayed on these sites: a great pleasure for all the engineers who were present during this day. The day was punctuated with a brief break during which visitors and guides were able to appreciate the charm of a small restaurant by the sea.
A big thank you to Nicolas Bally, President of Man France (ETH 2005 IIIE) and his team who organised this custom-made visit for the Chapter France alumni.
