The trilogy started with a Sunday visit in early September at the Martin + Andrea Wetli family winery in Uerikon. We took part in their yearly Autumn festivities (“Herbst-Fäscht”), which was a great occasion to taste some wines from the Zurich region. The cozy tasting was followed by a short trip to their vineyard.

Cozy tasting in Basel

The second degustation in Basel took place just short of a year after its first 2017 edition. For this occasion, we cooperated once again with “Musik und Wein” with whom we already enjoyed a tasting in Zurich. 15 Wine enthusiasts with all ranges of wine knowledge gathered in M&W’s cozy cellar located in the old town of Basel.
Yves, also our host in Zurich, prepared us a selection of Bordeaux wines with degustation and a comparison across the vineyards and production years from a variety of producers. The event was kicked off with an excellent white wine from Blaye, before diving into some more characteristic red wines. Delicious bread and cheese accompanied us throughout the evening, diversifying the textures and tastes amongst the nine wines tasted.
The degustation moved into the northern Médoc with rather young wines. Château Fourcas Hostens was the first red wine of the evening, an excellent choice to get our focus back on red wine with a characteristic Bordeaux complexity despite its young age (2014). Remaining in Médoc, we followed up with a classic Margaux from Château Deyrem Valentin (2014) that was very well received by the group, just like the next Margaux that would be enjoyed throughout the evening. Next up was a Grave from Château Léhoul Plénitude that showed a good texture and barrique taste but still came in a little bit young (2015).

We especially appreciated the authenticity with which Yves visited these domains and the picture he showed around gave us an impression of the work behind every tasted wine. Another Margaux from Château Bellevue Tayae (2014) confirmed Yves’ taste in picking wines from this region, before allowing ourselves a short digression towards the Libournais with an unavoidable St-Emilion from Château Munch whose tasting remembered us how St-Emilion made a name for itself. The red wine tour ended back in Médoc with an excellent Margaux from Château Demiraille with straight and elegant aromas. The tasting closed in the same color as it opened with a typical sweet white wine from Sauternes. As the event was coming to an end, attendees had an opportunity to purchase some of the excellent wines tasted throughout the evening.

All about rare wines

Our first event in 2019 took place on March 22nd in Zurich with Andreas Theiler, owner of the online wine shop www.bioweine.ch. The event took place at the ZUE building of ETH and was all about rare wines. Andreas talked us through numerous organic wines from Italy, Switzerland, Germany and France, many with traditional production methods. It was a very interesting and lively evening thanks to him. Andreas is a certified Wine Academic (WSET Level 4), which proves his vast knowledge of wine. For most of the wines we tasted, Andreas personally knew the producers and many bottles were produced in small quantities and are no longer on the market.

It was a truly special event with many remarkable wines!
We started with two wines from CasanovaWeine, Walenstatt, a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon blanc. After that, we tasted another series of white wine, a Madre from the Veneto and Schlossberg Riesling from Rheinhessen. We continued with red wine, first with a direct comparison of the same Bordeaux from two different years, then with Grignolino from Italy. We ended the red wines with an excellent Chateauneuf du Pape Vielle Vignes 2003 and finished the tasting with a Vin Jaune du Jura, Domaine Bourdy.
