Pascal Haegeli, an ETH alumni and Assistant Professor at Simon Fraser University (Haegeli's profile SFU) spoke passionately about avalanche safety and mountain users risk tolerance based on safety equipment they may or may not have.

Fascinated audience

The audience, many of which are avid backcountry skiers, were fascinates by the slides presented by Pascal. He also spoke of his research done in Canada, but also of his research partnerships with different universities in Switzerland. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of an avalanche safety device that inflates when one is caught in an avalanche. The device is intended to make you “float” to the top of the avalanche. Although there were discussions of testing it in situ, cooler heads prevailed. The question and answer period was a passionate one.

Swiss touch

Beverages were provided by the Alumni group and a couple of delicious cheese dishes (from les Amis du Fromage) complemented the evening. These added a nice Swiss touch to the event. Swiss Consul Andreas Rufer and Members of the Swiss Canadian Chamber of Commerce also graced us with their presence.
